Workshop Brain Roads : les étudiants du master design graphique et numérique à Berlin

Berlin
From Tuesday 31 October 2023 to Saturday 4 November 2023

Within the framework of the Science Week Berlin 2023, the research project Brain Roads 1 brings together for 4 days in Berlin the students of the Master in Graphic and Digital Design from ESAD de Reims with a group of students in Art and Design from the Weissensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, guided by the teachers and researchers Patricia Ribault & Olaf Avenati 2.

They are welcomed by the Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity of the Humboldt University of Berlin and by the neurosurgery department of Charité University Hospital in Berlin for 3 days of interdisciplinary work dedicated to the concept of neuroplasticity and the visual forms it can take.

An initial group of French-German student designers and artists will present the results of their plastic research, conducted in resonance with the work of Professor Hugues Duffau 3, after attending two awake surgeries in Montpellier in February 2023. A second group of French-German students will be tasked with capturing in real-time through drawing the concepts and speeches of researchers and surgeons over 3 days. The group will also attend a neurosurgery at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin. Back in their respective schools, the participants will engage in graphic and plastic design work to develop representation systems and plastic interpretations around the concept of neuroplasticity. See you in March 2024 to discover the results of this committed work.

Workshop Schedule

1.11 — Meeting between students from ESAD de Reims and weissensee kunsthochschule berlin at the Central Lab of the Cluster Matters of Activity. Working session with Professor Hugues Duffau.
2.11 — Symposium day (see program brochure and poster). Cocktail.
3.11 — Observation of brain surgery at Charité University Hospital, meeting between design and art students with medical interns and Master Class by Hugues Duffau. Tour of weissensee kunsthochschule berlin.

The Brain Roads project received support in 2023 from the French Embassy in Berlin and from the Matters of Activity Cluster - HU Berlin.

1 • Brain Roads is a research project initiated since 2019 by Olaf Avenati, a teacher at ESAD de Reims, and Patricia Ribault and Thomas Picht, Principal Investigators of the Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity from Humboldt University of Berlin. The project explores the graphic forms of the human brain model, in collaboration with an interdisciplinary research group that includes the Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity, Humboldt University of Berlin, the neurosurgery department of Charité University Hospital in Berlin, the neurosurgery department of Gui de Chauliac Hospital in Montpellier, the Information Design workshop from the Master in Graphic and Digital Design at ESAD de Reims, the Performative Design Research education at Weissensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, and the JIN (Video Game and Digital Interactions) major from Télécom SudParis - Institut polytechnique de Paris. 2 • Patricia Ribault is a professor in Performative Design Research at Weissensee Kunsthochschule Berlin and Principal Investigator of the Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity - HU Berlin • Olaf Avenati is a graphic and digital designer, an art teaching professor at ESAD de Reims, in the Master in Graphic and Digital Design, and an associated researcher in the Cluster Matters of Activity - HU Berlin.
3 • Professor Hugues Duffau is a doctor, neurosurgeon, and head of the neurosurgery department at Gui de Chauliac Hospital in Montpellier. He conducts research on neuroplasticity and brain functions, building on the clinical practice of neurosurgery with awake patients. He is the author of the book “L’erreur de Broca”, Michel Lafon, 2016.
