Brain Roads is an interdisciplinary French-German project for visualization and interactive exploration of the brain. It brings together graphic & digital designers, engineers and researchers in neurosurgery and social sciences. Its ambition is to develop visual representations and interactive tools for exploring the white matter of the human brain.

The workshop
The 3-day workshop, which brings together teams of designers, engineers and researchers, has two main objectives:
- understand the formative process of current images of the brain model.
- define visual design issues and sketch them out by visual means.
The workshop takes place in the premises of the Cluster of excellence Matters of Activity. image, space, material:

14:00 – 14:30 — Olaf Avenati, graphic & digital designer, lecturer
14:30 – 15:00 — Michel Simatic, engineer, senior lecturer

15:30 – 16:00 — Maxime Le Calvé, Post-doctoral researcher, anthropologist
16:00 – 16:30 — Fabrice Bourlez, psychoanalyst, philosopher, lecturer
16:30 – 17:00 — Patricia Ribault, Junior Professor in history and theory of Gestaltung
17:00 – 18:00 — informal discussions
25 October — Work session
All day long, designers, engineers and researchers will discuss in small groups and will create sketches (slides, exemples, references, models, printings, …) to envision the various aspects and visual design issues of the global project.
13:00 – 14:00 — lunch break
14:00 – 15:00 — Thomas Picht, PD Dr. Med. & neurosurgeon at Charité will present his perspective of the project and Felix Rasehorn, designer and reseacher at Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee will also present his MA design thesis on MRI and tracts visualisation.
During the afternoon, 2 VR helmets will be available for exploration of a virtual Operation room.
26 October — Restitutions

Brunch & Collective restitution
Designers and engineers will share the topics they have identified and give work directions to be developed during the upcoming semester.
